STITCH

THIS IS SHEFFIELD EXHIBITION - 2015

The Brief
To create a piece of furniture that is solely inspired by Sheffield which represents the city and what it has to offer in 2015.

The Product
STITCH is a simple yet innovative coffee table. The four timber components are all glued together before being stitched with leather banding. This makes for a very ‘Sheffield’ design because of the way it makes a feature of the joints and honest construction method.

To make STITCH a sustainable product, the materials are locally sourced and part-manufactured and assembled by the consumer. By encouraging this involvement with the creation of the product, the consumer should gain an emotional attachment to the piece of furniture. This will ensure the product is loved and owned for a longer time. The consumer will also have a higher appreciation for the skilled craftsmen, artists and designers they buy products from.

The coffee table was designed to create awareness of the council’s plans to start an industry for sourcing local timber. It also takes advantage of other sources of local timber which would otherwise be used as firewood. Creating something precious from local materials that people can cherish and feel proud of owning.

STITCH is a unique, limited edition, high quality piece that's made with love. The timber used in this product is inconsistently available in varying quantities and time frames. For this reason STITCH is not suitable for mass manufacture.
